Objectives:
The main objective of this project is to supply water both for human use in the villages and schools and to increase agricultural production in an eminently dry area, and thus diversify the diet, have more food intake, and develop better, with a job creation component by being able to be inserted in these agricultural activities and other employment initiatives.
Activities carried out:
1.Construction of a deep well (borehole)
Construction of the borehole at the Kilulu mission began with a comprehensive survey by the Geofardrilling company in August, identifying the best place to drill to a depth of 150 metres. After overcoming technical problems during drilling, a pump was installed at 120 metres, finding potable water at 80 metres.
In addition, a tower capable of holding 15 metric tonnes of water was built to install tanks, and a solar pumping system was implemented with all the necessary connections for water supply and collection. This system ensures sustainable access to clean, clear and safe drinking water.
2. Water distribution and supply
This activity has been carried out with the help of a tanker truck from the Shakadulo Water Supply company in the area. During the months when the well was not installed, water has been obtained some 30 km away from the Mission, thus being able to supply water to the villages and fields where there are water tanks for irrigation. Once the well is finished, this activity of distributing water to the villages, fields and schools will be carried out from this well, also requiring a tanker truck for this operation.
This activity was carried out from June to December 2023 and from January to July 2024, distributing a total of 930,000 litres of water to 7 villages (water distribution centres), 6 schools and 7 fields where there was a water deposit to help farmers to plant.
At least 10,000 people have benefited from this activity so far, both in the villages and in the schools and agricultural fields.
3. Increasing food production through water distribution
Several agricultural production fields have been created in the area, especially with women’s farming groups, teaching them effective agricultural methods of production and new nutritious food in the form of different vegetables.
Despite the short time the project and this activity has been implemented, it is already yielding positive results. It is not yet possible to determine the positive extent of the increase in food production, but due to the water distributed in the fields there is a big before and after change. The fields now have more production because farmers have planted more and irrigated better.
It is hoped that this year’s harvest will be more productive and thus help families with better nutrition.
4. Creation of employment and trade in the area
Firstly, it should be noted that thanks to the project, 13 training seminars have been held for farmers on more far-reaching production systems, the creation of cooperatives, economic market systems and how to better manage finances. This training will have an impact in the near future on the creation of employment and greater wealth in the area, as there will be greater productivity and opportunities created through increased agricultural activity that will also affect other services that are being created, such as transport, trade, etc.
These training seminars have been carried out during the project period from June 2023 to June 2024. About 450 farmers have benefited from this project initiative in the project action area, the majority of these beneficiaries are women.
5. Project monitoring
The project has been monitored in all its activities, including water supply, logistics and transport, advising farmers, participation in training seminars and logistics for the construction of the well.
Results:
This has been a project of great impact on the population of the area benefited by the activities carried out and which will continue over time.
This initiative is already bearing fruit, above all in the training of farmers, in the supply of water and in encouraging agriculture and food production.
The water supplied and now from the constructed well is helping thousands of people to have a better life, especially by being able to get water more easily, more frequently and in greater quantity.
This water is helping farmers to grow more food, which will eventually increase their standard of living, better nutrition and employability.
